Router wood3/25/2023 ![]() Routing walnut with a sharp bit is like passing a hot knife through butter. ![]() Western red cedar routs easily, but produces a very fine dust that some people are allergic to, and because of the high silica content in the wood, bits dull very quickly. Just as every species of wood has a unique appearance, each responds to machining with a router in its own way. If the bearing comes off in operation the bit will dig into the wood and could result in injury. Check that the screw holding the bearing in place is tight. A clean bit will give a smoother cut with less burning, and the bit will both run cooler and last longer. Clean off any accumulated pitch and sawdust from the carbide edges, and the bearing if it is fitted with one. Inspect your router bits before you use them. Disregard such pieces and only use sound stock. Locate any cracks or loose knots in the piece – these could shatter when the router bit contacts them, sending debris flying. If the router has facilities for dust collection, hook up a dust collector or a shop vacuum to collect the chips – this will keep your work area clean and the majority of the debris out of the air.īefore you begin routing a piece of wood, look it over carefully. Remove any tripping hazards from the floor area, and arrange your power cord in such a way that it doesn’t interfere with the travel of the router. Keep your work area clear of all obstructions. Whether you choose expansion- type foam plugs or full earmuffs, use them every time you use the router. Routers are among the loudest of power tools in the shop and exposure to noise at this level will have a detrimental effect on your long term hearing. A router removes a lot of dust and chips, and it ejects this debris with considerable force.Īdequate hearing protection is also mandatory. ![]() Before using your router, make sure that you are wearing the right safety gear.

Lightning tracker weatherbug3/25/2023 ![]() ![]() The spatial resolution is about 8 km, which is about the size of a small thunderstorm, so each camera pixel can see about one whole small storm or part of a large storm. It can record about 500 images per second, which is fast enough to see the progression of lightning as it brightens different parts of a cloud. It “sees” in a particular narrow band of light that lightning emits well and helps distinguish from other sources of light. The GLM is essentially a fast infrared video camera. It cannot, however, “see” if a channel from the flash hits ground or not. It records how bright the flashes are from above, how large of an area a flash covers, and how many flashes pass over any given location. The GLM monitors the optical emissions of lightning which reach space, similar to what we would see with our eyes. The Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) is an instrument on two weather satellites launched in 20 (GOES-16 and GOES-17) that map total lightning (in-cloud and cloud-to-ground) activity continuously day and night over the Americas and adjacent ocean regions. Scientists also use the OKLMA to investigate using lightning data in weather forecast models. What we do: NSSL uses the OKLMA to investigate how lightning characteristics relate to updrafts, precipitation, and severe storm processes. Sometimes flashes are very small and last only a few milliseconds, but some can cover very large areas and keep going for up to 6-7 seconds. ![]() High time resolution (20 to 100 ns) makes it possible to watch lightning progress from initiation into different regions of storms. They also use a time-of-arrival technique to locate source points in 3 dimensions and time, usually using at least 6 or 7 stations to keep errors lower. LMA systems also detect radio noise, but in the very high frequency (VHF) band around 60 MHz. NSSL is currently building a mobile array in order to provide targeted lightning observations in conjunction with field campaigns. Research LMA's exist in Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle, northern Alabama, Washington D.C., Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and many other locations. Up to thousands of points can be mapped for an individual lightning flash to reveal its location and the development of its structure. Lightning Mapping Arrays provide three-dimensional mapping of lightning channel segments near the array. What we do: NSSL uses the data collected by the NLDN to learn how storms produce CG flashes and how these flashes relate to other storm hazards. ![]() The +CG return stroke, however, more often has a sustained current that can have greater chance of igniting fires. Positive CG (+CG) flashes effectively bring positive charge to ground (or negative charge up) and almost always have only a single return stroke. CG flashes that bring negative charge from the cloud to ground (“negative CG” or “-CG”) can have multiple return strokes, which can sometimes be seen visually as a flickering of the channel to ground. Flashes outside of the network have larger location errors and may not even be detected.Įach system may detect more than one stroke (in-cloud or return) for a single lightning flash. Location accuracy is best when lightning occurs within a network of stations. Radio signals are detected by multiple stations (at least 3) are used to determine the location of the stroke by a time-of-arrival technique. Since there are many other sources of radio noise, the systems have to first identify which bursts are likely to be caused by lightning. CG return strokes usually have larger currents that make stronger signals that are easier to detect. A “stroke” can be a fast current within the cloud, or a “return stroke” in a channel to ground. These two systems work by detecting radio waves (sferics) emitted by fast electric currents (strokes) in lightning channels. Severe Weather 101 Lightning Detection Lightning Detection NetworksĬurrently, cloud-to-ground (CG) and intra-cloud (IC) lightning flashes are detected and mapped in real-time by two different networks in the United States-the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN), a system owned and operated by Vaisala Inc, and the Earth Networks Total Lightning Network.

Akutagawa ryunosuk emanga3/25/2023 ![]() What really worried him was the damage to his self-esteem.Īkutagawa briefly moves his attention to nosy locals – most of whom seem to find it hilarious, if not confidence boosting, that this guy has a massive nose.īut then it’s a sudden and enduring return to the nature of an esteem crisis.Īs for the people in Ikenō, they maintained that they were happy to have someone with such a nose, such a holy priest at Zenchi Temple. The second reason goes back to my brief aside on modern narcissism. One time, a temple pageboy was substituted for the usual apprentice monk, and when this young man sneezed, he accidentally shook his hand, and the Nose’s nose ended up thrust into the middle of his rice gruel, at least according to the rumor going around Kyoto in those days. It’s not an easy task, either, as anyone who’s tried to eat an ice cream and jammed their nose into it will testify. ![]() So the Nose had one of the apprentice monks sit a few feet across from him and hold up his nose. If he tried to eat alone, the tip of his nose would poke into the middle of the food in his bowl. ![]() He couldn’t even eat breakfast by himself. The first was that a long nose, practically speaking, was not very useful. If you have a big nose these days, you’ll be inclined to get plastic surgery so you can secure that perfect selfie.įor the priest with his hurtful nickname, there are two reasons why he’s unhappy with this thing on his face. Akutagawa wrote this tale over 100 years ago, but we’re sure everyone back then still remained reasonably image conscious – you have to be to win favour with the gender of your choice.īut vanity and self-loathing are far more pronounced in our age of social media, celebrity press coverage, and smartphones. Immediately I found this interesting as we’re in an age of narcissism and insecurity. Nothing terrified him more than the idea that someone would bring up his nose in conversation. It wasn’t just that as a monk he should’ve been completely focused on the Pure Land awaiting him in the afterlife, it was that he didn’t want other people to know he was so concerned about his nose. Of course, during all this time, he continued to pretend that he didn’t care about it in the least. From the time he was an apprentice in the inner hall, climbing the ranks, even until the present day, he was constantly worrying about his nose. This Buddhist priest was now in his fifties. ![]() To get a good picture of it, imagine someone with a long, thin sausage dangling casually down the middle of his face.Ī strange start, but the reason for why this particular nose is an issue becomes apparent in the next paragraph. Its width was the same from top to bottom. Five or six inches long, it hung down from above his upper lip down to the bottom of his chin. If you mention “the Nose” to that high-ranking priest from Zenchi Temple, you won’t find a soul in Ikenō who doesn’t know the name. So, what piqued the interest of those greats? Here’s the opening paragraph: Japanese literary great Natsume Sōseki was so impressed with this short story he sent Akutagawa a letter of praise.įurther to that, in this book there’s Rashōmon and 15 other short stories – it’s worth buying the book for all of them – and an introduction from the living legend Haruki Marukami. Instead, it’s an altogether more bizarre and unsettling look at narcissism. They also share the same satirical edge, lampooning pomp and ceremony in a hierarchical social structure.Īkutagawa’s work also dispenses with the comedic elements of Gogol’s story. Regardless, the stories are quite different – except for their focus on the olfactory body part with nostrils and mucus. And, perhaps, the translation of “nose” from Russian into Japanese (and vice versa) doesn’t quite flow in the same way as for English-speaking countries. But, being a learned sort, I’d bet money he knew of the Russian wit. I couldn’t find any information about whether Akutagawa read Gogol’s classic farcical tale. These were short fables written during the 13th century from an author no one knows. The Japanese writer’s effort is an adaptation of famous native folklore from the Uji Shūi Monogatari. Well, Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s work first reached publication in 1916 – over five decades after the Russian’s satirical classic. And now there’s another short story review of… The Nose? What’s this? My last book review was The Nose by Nikolai Gogol.

Polymail review3/25/2023 To open a new tab in Mail press Shift and choose File > New Viewer Tab. With the macOS Big Sur release, Apple added tabs to Mail, so you can have multiple inboxes open at once and switch between them just like tabs on Safari. Mail is also heavily integrated with macOS, so you can send replies from the Notification Centre, or send an email from within another app using the Share feature. We have perviously had a little trouble setting up Hotmail and though. Mail works with the various types of email accounts, including iCloud, Exchange and Gmail, and it’s easy to set up – just open Mail, choose Mail > Add Account from the menu bar and enter your email details. There’s no need to use a separate app like SendBigFile, Mail does it all for you with the Mail Drop feature. If you need to send a large attachment (or more) but don’t want to clog up your recipients inbox, Mail will automatically store the attachment in the cloud for them to download. Mail uses intelligent search to determine the most likely email you are looking for and also offers suggestions that might further narrow down your results. Use the Search field in the top right to find emails. In a similar fashion, you can select certain Mailboxes as Favourites, and then quickly access them from the Favourites section in the Mail sidebar. So that emails from people in your VIP list are diverted to a separate inbox (meaning you can ignore everything else). One feature of Mail that we love is the option to differentiate between VIP senders. ![]() This includes creating Smart Mailboxes (folders) with set rules that determine which emails are directed there. You can sort your email in various ways to make it easier to manage. There’s also that essential elements of modern digital communication – emoji. Mail also offers various handy features such as built-in Mark Up tools that you can use to illustrate and emphasise aspects of the attachments – and even add your signature. One of the key benefits is the simple fact that there is a matching app available for your iPhone and iPad – but there is so much more than the integration between the different devices that allows you to ‘Hand off’ an email from one device to another and carry on from where you left off. Like us you are probably using the Mail app that comes with your Mac. The ten options we’ve found are not in ranked order – we recommend all these email packages – but some will be suited to more specific needs, so we will leave it to you to evaluate which will suit you best. We’ll start by looking at Apple’s Mail, then we’ll evaluate some free email options, and we’ll also feature some paid services that are worthy of consideration.
